Know this. Depression can easily become a habit. I know because it happened to me. I arrived in America in 1983 and felt alone. Even though I had a spouse and two children I didn’t know how to cope with the change of living in a different country. I wish I had known what I am about to tell you; I would not have suffered, or allowed my family to suffer through my depression.
So here’s what I know about depression. It comes in the night and it continues into the morning and throughout the day. It allows human beings to not do anything. It robs people of their vitality. It causes a kind of mental paralysis. When I suffered from it, I didn’t want to get out of bed. I didn’t want to do anything. I just wanted to be depressed and keep on being depressed. That way, I didn’t have to do anything. I didn’t have to bother about getting up, showering, cleaning my teeth or getting dressed—I was depressed and it entitled me to behave in any way I wanted. What did I care? Who cared? No-one. Except of course that is not true. People do care….but when a person is depressed it is hard to know what to do. So here is a combat move:
Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. Wake up. WAKE UP. Tell yourself to wake up. Awaken. Awaken from your sleep. Awaken from your habit. Wake up and take a deep breath. Breathe in your life force. Breathe again even deeper. Fill your lungs with air. Fill your very being with oxygen. Breathe, breathe, breathe. Expel air and take another deep breath. If you are near a window or door, open it and breathe in fresh air. Wake up today.
At the top of every hour take a minute to breathe. At the top of every hour thank the universe, or God or creation for your life. You are a living, warm-blooded, air breathing human being. You were put on this planet to breathe and to be alive. We need you to wake up and breathe long deep breaths of new life.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. You have no idea how much it means for you to be awake and to breathe. Your awakening is something that we have all been waiting for. You have a purpose in life. Your purpose for today is to awaken and to breathe. That’s all. And yet, that is enormous. It takes courage to awaken and breathe. It takes discipline to breathe at the top of every hour.
It is a Life Warrior combat move of extreme importance. And you can do it. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Be blessed today in this moment. Be blessed that you are a Life Warrior and that you have awoken to your vitality. Thank you so much. We love you and we appreciate you very much. Go in peace today and be kind to yourself. We like you even if you forget to breathe at the top of the hour. For now, this is a first step. Get up. Awaken and enjoy breathing. Just for today, just for this moment. Thank you.
