One of the wonderful things about Buddhists is their compassion and focus on world peace. Even though Tibet was taken over by the Chinese in 1959, and even though thousands were massacred and temples destroyed, the Tibetan people pray for compassion and world peace! One of our companions said, “I really dislike these Chinese guards standing watch.” And I said in a joking way, “What about compassion?” It’s a hard thing to comprehend but as Tashi said,
“I have Chinese friends, we must move forward, together.”
War arises through greed. The Chinese wanted the wealth of the Tibetan lands and so they took it over. The Tibetans tried to fight but in the end they could not resist. And now they must live peacefully side by side with their captors. You and I will have come from ancestors who have done exactly the same thing. At one time we have been the aggressors and we have fought and taken over another land and another people.
Today my friend, it is time to put down the war. Whatever you are disliking or even hating, it is time to put it down and move on. Be at peace in your mind. You don’t have to love your warring neighbor, co-worker or boss, but you can live together side by side in peace and harmony.
